The Community
Foundation of Huntsville/Madison County established an
office in Huntsville
in August of 2009, joining fourteen other community foundations
in the state of Alabama. Community foundations work to increase
giving. That is done by educating potential donors about
the tax benefits of giving and by providing tax-advantageous
avenues for giving. By growing the donor pool, they strengthen
their community's non-profits and churches. A community foundation
can also provide cost-efficient management of funds for non-profits
and churches.
Within the past two years,
the Community Foundation has established funds totaling
$5.4M. The majority of those funds are donor
advised funds. Donor advised funds enable a donor to take
an immediate tax deduction, establish a charitable giving
fund, and give donations from the fund over time.
How it works
•
You make a donation to your community foundation—you
can give cash, appreciated stocks, real estate, or other
assets.
• The Community Foundation sets up a special fund in your name,
in the name of your family or business, or in honor of any
person or organization you choose.
• You receive tax benefits in the year your gift is made.
• You make gifts from your fund to support the causes and organizations
you care about most.
• The Community Foundation handles all the administrative details
and issue these gifts to charities in the name of the fund
you establish (if you prefer, can be made anonymously).
Possible Scenarios
• Year-end tax planning
• Preserving an estate through planned giving
• Establishing a private foundation
• Gifting closely held stock
• Gifting highly appreciated stock
• Gifting a portion of the proceeds from the sale of a business
