HAGA helped sponsor TEDxHuntsville,
a local, independently
organized TED event.
I reluctantly agreed to attend. Frankly, I wasn’t
excited about giving up my Sunday afternoon. TED is an annual
event that brings together
"leading thinkers and doers" across any discipline
to share ideas. "TED" stands for Technology, Entertainment
and Design. The event, however, was a blast!
Where else could you hear ideas from "Rocket City
Redneck" Travis Taylor, learn about advances in mapping
the human genome from HudsonAlpha's Dr. Neil Lamb, and
brush up on
your
beer knowledge from Huntsville
brew master Steve Below? I was amazed at the variety of topics,
the
depth of
our community’s talent and the passion of the presenters.
Each talk ranged from 5 to 20 minutes and managed to keep
even my meager
attention span focused. Some presentations were educational,
some inspirational
and some just really funny. Although watching Dynetics rocket
scientist Tim Pickens attempt to ride his homemade rocket
bike across the stage was fun,
my favorite
presentation
was
entitled "You’re
Not That Great: A Motivational Speech" by Dr. Daniel
Crosby from IncBlot.

TEDxHuntsville was locally
organized by volunteers, led by Everett Alexander, Amy
Robinson, and Hiroko Sumikura. They
did a superb job bringing together the event and deserve
a resounding thank you from all attendees. I look
forward to next year’s event and recommend
that everyone attend. Trust me - it's well worth your Sunday
afternoon.
